Squad Training

The Tobi Ishi Kai Kata Squad has a formidable reputation in Wado Karate. Since it’s formation on 2004, students under the tutelage of Sensei Mark Beeby & Sensei Justine Wilson-Cleife have achieved phenomenal success on the competition circuit, from local through to international level. During the last three years the squad has averaged over 300 medals per annum.

Squad training is now held in association with English Wado Federation and is held monthly. Training is open to all students and caters for all levels. Kata training is still overseen by Sensei Beeby, with senior Kata instruction taken by Sensei Wilson-Cleife. Kumite instruction is given by Glen Bayliss and occasionally by guest instructors such as Jamie Jewel and Alan Troughton.

Meet some of the students

Tara WilsonTara Wilson

Tara started karate at the age of 6 years and at that time was unable to concentrate for more than 10 minutes at a time in any lesson.

However, by the time she had reached 10 years, Tara was winning numerous titles including Wadokai British Champion, Wadokai European Team Champion and Individual Bronze medallist.

Today Tara (12 yrs), has grown into a formidable competitor, known for her strong, powerful performances in kata, she has gained too many titles to mention, and not enough room to store all the medals and trophies.

Callum WhatmoreCallum Whatmore

Callum instantly took to karate and within his first year of training began to bring home the medals. Callum has presence on a competition mat and agility that serves him well in kata and kumite.

Callum consistently medals at every competition in Kata and in the past year has also shown outstanding talent in Kumite.

Like Tara and the other students mentioned here, Callum has gained far too many titles to mention but has achieved medals in events such as the Wado British Championships and Europeans.

Emily DaviesEmily Davies

Emily is a natural technician and a gifted karate-ka. Emily’s tenacity to perform the perfect kata often means that she will not use a kata in competition until she has spent an infinite number of hours training, refining and perfecting her performance.

Emily, like her team mates has achieved outstanding results in competition again winning numerous titles.

Katrina WilsonKatrina Wilson

Katrina, although no longer with Tobi Ishi Kai deserves a mention. Katrina, daughter of Sensei Wilson-Cleife, began her training with Sensei Mark Beeby in 1999 at the age of six, by the age of 10 years her tuition, abilities and dedication to training led to her invite to join the Wadokai England team to compete in Japan. Since then under the tuition of Sensei Beeby and Sensei Wilson-Cleife, Katrina went on to win the European Championships three consecutive times.

Since leaving Tobi Ishi kai to move in with her father, Katrina has gone on to win the Wadokai European Championships for a forth year running and is tipped as England’s chance of winning gold at the world championships in Japan in 2010. All at Tobi Ishi Kai wish her every success.
